I really liked this. It reminded me of the Ning group Grace in Small Things. The site encourages members to write 5 things that they are grateful for everyday. Whether you do that through the site or on a sheet of paper by your desk it's a great way to - as you say - take that look around and recognize your place in the world.

There's a strong case for the majority of people taking their offline persona into the online realm. Which kind of makes you wonder what some people are like offline - until you see the mess the world is in.

Thankfully, as you say, people are realizing it more and true connection is happening - we just need to help it along.

I love the section on being a show-off. I'm a firm believer in sharing information, whether it comes from me or somebody else. Promoting other people's blog, comments, website etc...not only helps those around you, it builds your own credibility because people know you are a resource of good information.

What a nice little riff, Danny.

These principles have always been true (social media doesn't change that at all). But you're right: it does make it easier to see through bad intent.

Other-promotion is probably one of the most important tenants of mass-connection. It may take a while for people to recognize that, but when they do I think the planet will be a brighter shade of blue. (I hope.)

It's a non-linear world and Moore's Law is bending the curves even sharper than ever before. It's probably a good thing, then, that we have a chance to connect with other brains: it's getting harder every day to stand your own ground when little pale blue dots start spinning faster than they used to.

Completely agree, Jennifer - and it works offline just as well as it does online. All we need is for people to recognize this more and encourage each other as much (if not more) as we promote ourselves.

It's amazing what you see and feel when you sit for a moment somewhere (in the midst of the city streets, in traffic on the highway, on a bench at the mall, etc.) and really look at what's going on around you. So many other dots moving about.
