This is one of your best posts; fascinating, insightful and useful. Social media has become my right hand man/woman as I explore a new ways to teach in the online environment. I have been working on and thinking about the idea of a personal learning network and in doing so realized the powerful connections that social media allows me to make and to learn from.
    I enjoyed your good thinking!

Always good to get a little zen on the weekend Danny. Love the six aspects and how they tie in so nicely into the SM space. The "below" one struck me as particularly interesting...because your one word assessments of the various social networks is dead on.

Insightful post - inspired me to reflect on what I hope to gain from using social media, both on a personal and on a professional level. Trying to assess social media overall can be a bit daunting (to put it lightly), but your approach made it a lot less threatening. Thanks!

I'd argue everyone who blogs and everyone on any social networking site, including everyone who is asking questions like you ask, is smack-dab in the middle of the "below" section.

Anyone who denies they are below are akin to the stupidity of self-proclaimed social media experts.

As social media changes every day with new apps and tools and people joining the space, if you're not below, I'd ask a lot of questions. I'm below.

I'd definitely agree with you in that no-one ever stops learning, no matter how solid a grounding you have. Once you say you know enough, that's when you start to go down the Backward direction again.

    Danny,

This especially matters a bunch: "Simply put, don’t always go with the flow - genius is never the norm."

It can be so very easy to follow the pack when it comes to social media, or business for that matter. But stagnation is the enemy of innovation. Reminds me of my fave Emerson quote: "Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail."

Yes, there are sound practices that can form great foundations, but what excites me most often are old ideas taken to new places, and I see it happen in this space all the time.

    Cheers,
    Amber

All valid points, Danny, and those who have embarked upon their own social media journey would do well to think about each of the points you've raised.

My approach in life has been to keep moving (not always at full throttle, as there are times when it's prudent to slow down and observe) while maintaining awareness of everything around me. And I try to remember the importance of taking an occasional glance in the rear view mirror for a much needed dose of wisdom when determining the way forward.

My sense of social media direction and dreams:

I currently spend too much time "in" my home office working "on" my computer and I would like to move "up" to the point where I can go "out" and travel more, go to conferences, meet clients in different locations... sheerly because I am a social being who loves to travel and meet people for real. So up, up and away for me!

Both inspired and inspiring. Great post, Danny. Nice to take a minute out of our hectic and chaotic lives to figure out which directions we're being pushed and pulled and which way we actually want to go. I'm bookmarking this post for a little meditation in my online life. Thank you!
